Transforming Old Furniture: How Kaylee Brouwer’s Furniture Rehab Redefines Recycling with Style
Entrepreneur Kaylee Brouwer from Ramara Township is taking the concept of recycling to new heights through her innovative business, Furniture Rehab. This venture has not only blossomed from a passion project but has now become a leading name in stylish furniture upcycling.
The Mission Behind Furniture Rehab
Kaylee specializes in rescuing outdated furniture that would typically end up in landfills. She meticulously transforms these pieces into chic decor items for homes, sourcing them from discount shops, auctions, and online marketplaces. Her creative journey began in 2014, and as her skills have flourished, so has her reputation.
"I’ve been around, but people are recognizing my name now," Brouwer shared.
The Beginning of a Creative Journey
Brouwer’s journey into furniture refurbishing began while pregnant with her first child. She purchased a $10 coffee table to enhance her living room decor and, after painting it, unexpectedly sold it online for $80—netting a profit of $70. This initial success inspired her to dive deeper into the world of furniture art.
"I love painting, and it blossomed into this passion," she said.
Self-Taught Skills and Tools of the Trade
Initially, Kaylee learned various techniques through YouTube, which offered invaluable tutorials on painting and woodworking. With guidance from her husband, who is adept at construction, she mastered the use of essential tools, including:
- Chop saw
- Drills
- Dremel tools
- Router
- Table saw
- Orbital sander
- Brad nailer
Evolving Techniques and Materials
Through her journey, Brouwer transitioned from using hobby shop paints to exploring high-quality options, including fusion mineral paint from TJ’s Treasures and Custom Creations.
"My business was flourishing, and some of the paints had built-in top coats and primers, so I wanted to explore that," she explained.
A Unique Approach to Business
Unlike many artisans, Brouwer prefers to avoid commissions to manage client expectations better. She believes in the freedom of choosing her projects.
"I like to choose what I work on, and if people like it, they buy it," she stated.
Her focus has shifted from repainted antique buffets to larger, more intricate pieces, each one crafted with great care and attention.
Craftsmanship with a Personal Touch
Brouwer’s distinctive style reflects her artistic sensibility. "That’s the beauty of art. You are allowed to have your own style and own it," she said. She frequently follows industry leaders to stay updated on new techniques and shares camaraderie with local artisans.
Certified Expertise in Home Staging
As a certified home stager, Kaylee understands how to harmonize colors and decor styles. This expertise significantly enhances her ability to showcase her bespoke furniture.
"That really helped me to properly showcase my furniture," she mentioned.
Creative Workspace and Selling Platforms
Furniture Rehab operates out of dedicated outbuildings at Brouwer’s home, ensuring that her craft is well-organized and protected. Completed projects are highlighted properly to attract potential buyers.
Kaylee showcases her furniture through her Facebook and Instagram pages, as well as on Kijiji and other online marketplaces. Customers are encouraged to visit by appointment to experience her creations firsthand.
