Transforming a Penthouse into a Dream Home: The Journey of Interior Designer Assel Baimakhan

Just over three years ago, interior designer Assel Baimakhan envisioned a blank canvas for her clients’ future penthouse. However, upon arriving at the two-story living space in Almaty, Kazakhstan, she found a surprising sight: a fully populated room encumbered with welded scaffolding and sturdy metal structures. Despite its 5,016 square feet and stunning views of the Tien Shan Mountains, the apartment had been prepped as a makeshift bunker against potential earthquakes.

Overcoming Initial Challenges

"The first visit was shocking," recalls Baimakhan, founder of Casa Azzurra in Chicago. The previous owner had begun a renovation with an unconventional approach, fearing seismic activity in the region. Despite the building’s sound engineering designed for earthquakes, Baimakhan faced the task of stripping away the unwanted reinforcements. "It took a month just to remove them," she states.

With the penthouse cleared, Baimakhan directed her focus towards crafting a warm, inviting space for a local family with three school-age children. The wife of the family shared her discovery of Baimakhan through social media, expressing her intention to work with her even before the home purchase. "We lived in a former apartment she designed, and it was incredibly comfortable," she adds, highlighting the deep trust in Baimakhan’s vision.

A Trust-Based Collaboration

This partnership’s success was built on mutual trust. The family had minimal requests, leaving aesthetic choices predominantly in Baimakhan’s capable hands. "We felt confident letting her take the creative lead," the wife said. Ultimately, the results exceeded their expectations.

Baimakhan’s design reflects a modern chalet style, elegantly merging traditional elements with modern functionality. The interiors are adorned with custom furnishings, unique marble, and exquisite moldings, presenting a home that is not only stylish but also practical for family life.

Inspired Interiors: Key Design Elements

The design project began with a painting by Kazakh artist Malik Mukanov, whose soft palette of pale pink and cream influenced the first-floor color scheme. This piece hangs above a custom 11-foot dining table that can extend to accommodate 16 guests—a vital feature for the culturally rich gatherings common in Kazakhstan.

The adjacent living room complements the dining area and features:

  • Brass-accented tables and chairs
  • A soothing dove-gray sofa
  • A two-tone rug from Italian brand Meridiani

"I aimed for a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere," says Baimakhan. The room is enhanced by handmade gypsum moldings crafted by local artisans, alongside walls finished with Italian Pietra Viva marble.

Marble and Functionality in the Kitchen

Throughout the penthouse, marble plays a significant role, notably in the kitchen and bathrooms. The kitchen features Italian Panda marble countertops, with its dramatic black-and-white veining beautifully contrasting against American walnut cabinetry. This compact yet efficient space resembles a yacht galley, emphasizing functionality while maintaining elegant aesthetics.

Bedrooms Designed for Growth

On the first floor, two children’s bedrooms were designed with a playful spirit, incorporating colors that reflect their personalities, including Lego-inspired artwork. The primary suite upstairs features another piece by Mukanov, a tapestry that influenced the earthy color palette, including a custom dusty-pink velvet headboard for the bed. The suite also boasts spacious his-and-her walk-in closets featuring bespoke glass-front cabinetry.

Creating Family-Centric Spaces

Two cozy areas—a breakfast nook and a secondary living room—were designed for family moments. The lounge, featuring stunning panoramic views, is adorned with elegant, curved Eichholtz sofas and a custom sideboard that showcases intricate carvings. Baimakhan captures the essence of natural beauty within the space, ensuring that nature takes center stage.

“It’s spacious and filled with light,” the wife says, expressing that this room has become their beloved family gathering place, radiating warmth and comfort.

Conclusion: A Testament to Design Success

The renovation of this penthouse stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and creativity in interior design. Assel Baimakhan’s expertise transformed an initial disaster into a harmonious family home, resonating with beauty and function.
