Designers Daniel Rabin and Annie Ritz found themselves crafting the home’s revival almost like an unwritten narrative, starting from the outside and working inwards. "It was like designing almost in reverse," Rabin reflects. Contrary to the usual process, they initiated the project by developing outdoor spaces, creating an inviting outdoor living room and kitchen. The primary suite was addressed next, even before understanding how all elements would link together. The full vision of the house emerged only when the Hollywood power couple, both writer-producers with children, temporarily vacated the premises. This allowed the design team to renovate the home’s floor plan and add a substantial 900-square-foot second story.
Challenges of a Midcentury Structure
The original structure presented its own set of challenges. The house, purchased for its flat lot, sought after privacy, and a pool—an unusual feature in Laurel Canyon’s hilly landscape—wasn’t in the best condition. While it had midcentury roots, Rabin described it as "midcentury light." He noted, "The good midcentury was sort of buried in there," given its construction in the ’60s and a renovation that hadn’t aged well through the ’90s.
One standout element was the living room featuring clerestory windows that provided breathtaking views, which ultimately helped guide the design choices.
Choosing the Perfect Hue
An essential aspect of redesigning the home’s aesthetic was selecting the ideal paint color to create a warm, inviting atmosphere. After testing nearly 20 different shades, the team finally settled on Benjamin Moore’s Cream. Ritz expressed her delight, stating, "The minute you walk in, the house kind of glows."
