Betsy Wentz’s Colorful Sewickley Pool House: 100% Fun Design

Transforming a Sewickley Home: The Journey to a Stunning Pool and House

During the pandemic, many homeowners began dreaming of enhancing their living spaces. Interior designer Betsy Wentz was no exception, and her vision turned into reality when she created a stunning pool and accompanying pool house for her family last summer.

From Small Ideas to Grand Designs

Initially, Wentz considered a modest pool project, but this idea quickly expanded. “We progressed from a very small concept of a compact pool to a larger design that included the pool house,” she explained. This evolution reflects Wentz’s expertise in interior design and her ability to blend vision with practicality.

A Mid-Century Modern Pool House

The new 800-square-foot pool house exudes Mid-Century Modern vibes, harmonizing beautifully with the family’s 1970s Sewickley home, which is uniquely characterized by century-old stone walls. Featuring a glass nano wall, the structure opens directly to the black-bottom pool, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor experience. The pool house also boasts terrazzo tile floors from Concrete Collaborative in California.

“We aimed for a very modern look to resonate with the house while incorporating old, tumbled stone for the exterior fireplace,” Wentz noted. The interior design cleverly integrates this stone feature as an interior wall within the living room, enhancing the cohesiveness of the space.

Creative Use of Color and Art

The pool house is equipped with a kitchenette and includes essential features like a bathroom and changing room. A standout element is the striking wall of stacked blue tile, showcasing Wentz’s love for vibrant colors. “It was a little jewel box for me to explore different palettes; everything was just 100% fun,” she said, emphasizing the thoughtfulness behind her choices. Wentz also adorned the house with artwork collected during her travels, including a lively painting by Rob Tucker, and incorporated a vintage rug runner that had been waiting for the perfect moment to shine.

Year-Round Entertaining

Despite Pittsburgh’s brief pool season, Wentz utilizes this outdoor oasis throughout the year. The space is not just for swimming; it serves as a hub for family gatherings and entertaining guests. “For a big family like ours, it’s wonderful to have additional space for everyone,” she mentioned. Wentz and her husband, Chris, enjoy this integrated space with their four children, ranging in ages from 13 to 22, further solidifying the pool area as a vital component of their home.

Conclusion: A Dream Realized

Betsy Wentz’s journey from concept to completion highlights not only her design prowess but also the transformative power of thoughtful home renovations.
